The Maasai Meet The Nimiipuu

December 16, 2014 by VolkhardG Leave a Comment

By Volkhard Graf with contributions from Patricia Angle, December 15, 2014

Recently, a special cross-cultural event took place at the Nez Perce Pinewaus Community Center. Colorful Maasai warriors met the Nez Perce in a cultural exchange. Both cultures were at full display, which included dancing, art work, and of course food! True to Native tradition, the guests were welcomed by Nez Perce dancers with a Grand Entry. They in turn responded in their own way of honoring their hosts.

The Maasai group  called “Friends of Sironka” consisted of 12 dancers including their leader. The warrior dancers from Kenya were impressive in their traditional clothing, weaponry, and jewelry. They invited several people from the audience to jump with them in their unique style and to participate in a skit representing a Maasai wedding party.

Drums, made by Nez Perce Youth during culture camp were set up for display. The Maasai also presented their bead work and offered it for sale. Income derived from the sale helps pay for their travel expenses and allows them to send funds to their families in Kenya.

No significant event can go by without food–so  the Chief Joseph Warriors Committee fed the Maasai a delicious meal of buffalo roast, scalloped potatoes, desert, and cake. Thanks to another local family, the Maasai also got to taste traditional Nez Perce roots and huckleberries.

After their welcome and performance in Lapwai, the group made their way to Kamiah, Idaho where they enjoyed more food and a little down time, which was passed by spirited talk and by singing one of their songs. They also learned something about the history of the Nimiipuu, which lead them to observe many similarities in the way both tribes experiences the effects of colonialism.

The next day, Sunday morning, the Maasai shared inspiring songs and dances at the two Nez Perce churches in Kamiah, dressed in their cultural beaded clothes. (Listen to “Jonah” and “My God, My God”) Members of the group also shared how Christmas is celebrated in Kenya. Pastor Emmanuel, a member of the team prayed a prayer of blessing over the people in his native language.

Cultural exchanges like this one allow us to note both differences and similarities in our cultures. Sironka wisely noted that where cultural differences exit, we celebrate them and learn from each other. It was a special blessing to observe how well the Maasai have integrated their culture with their faith in Jesus Christ. It is an inspiration for Indigenous people, who were often forced to put away and forget their culture when they became followers of Jesus.

Biblical Christianity is never found apart from a culture. It is always part of a culture. The Christianity of the New Testament was a part of the Greco-Roman world of the 1st century. There is no such thing as plain Christianity. Christianity always expresses itself through a culture. It is unique in that it can be expressed equally well in any culture.

50 Years Later-YWAM is still innovating

December 24, 2010 by admin Leave a Comment

YWAM Still Innovating Mission Work

Loren Cunningham’s vision first took shape in 1960. Fifty years later, nearly 4.5 million people have been involved in Youth With A Mission.

“God called us tor break some norms, and change the paradigm of missions. Although we didn’t know what all that meant, we were used to do the radical. When YWAM was founded, people didn’t think missionaries were anything but westerners speaking to non-westerners under a shade tree, often with a pith helmet. That was never what God thought!” (Loren Cunningham)

“We have always recognized that it takes everyone and that God has uniquely made different people. We are called to release young people into their destiny. Our focus is to develop potential in others.”  (Darlene Cunningham)

“God is willing to use ordinary people of all backgrounds! He is no respecter of nationalities, color of skin, or background. He is willing to use anyone.”

“All Nations are sending Nations, they all have the Great Commission in their Bible, no matter what language they read it in. We need each other desperately. At this point, YWAM is a majority non-western mission! It is an incredible experience to see the riches of Jesus revealed through the human creation, blended together in this adventure that we have experienced in these last 50 years.” (John Dawson)

At the final 50th Anniversary celebration in Hawaii, one participant described her feeling like being at a United Nations event because of the over 100 nationalities present.

“It has been an enormous privilege of blowing the bugle and we have been honored and humbled by what God has done. Her certainly is the “wave maker.”

This video segment about YWAM’s 50 anniversary was shown on CBN. We trust it will encourage and challenge you to get involved. He wants you, He loves you, He likes you!

Where Were You, God?

September 11, 2009 by admin 1 Comment

Where were you, God?

The horrific events of 9-11-2001 have no doubt caused many to ask questions like this one. “Where you asleep God, or on vacation or did you just not pay attention?”

Interestingly enough, these questions seem to be asked mostly by people who may not think or care about God when things run smoothly in their lives. Some who ask may not even believe there is a God or that he can be known.

Others may have a notion of what God is like and events like the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 seem to rattle what little trust they may have had in him.

Somehow we feel that God, who is all-powerful has the obligation to protect us from evil. Many may ask: “Can the all-powerful God, let evil happen to our lives and at the same time claim to be the God of Love?”

Here are some answers, that Lee Strobel, an investigative reporter was given by Peter John Kreeft, a first rate philosophical thinker with a PhD. from Fordham University, who has been a philosophy professor at Boston College since 1965.

Recently, (June 21, 2009) our local area newspaper, the Lewiston Morning Tribune published a great article on the Picard family (Nez Perce) from Lapwai. They share how Jesus helped them through the tragic events in which they lost two of their sons within a year, and how he continues to use them to bring wholeness to their sons friends. If you like to find out more about their journey see this document:

Who Do YOU Say Jesus Is?

December 30, 2008 by VolkhardG Leave a Comment

Paul and Colin found themselves next to each other on a flight from Denver to Boston. Their conversation quickly got to the “so what do you do?” question. Colin was fascinated to meet Paul, a real-life pastor in a Bible-believing church. Soon they started talking about truth.

Colin assumed that all religions are equally valid and that contradictions between the different belief systems are fully acceptable, because to him absolute truth does not exist. To him, exclusive truth about Jesus was a result of a rationalistic Western worldview. In contrast, Paul pointed out that the idea of one God and exclusive truth came from Middle Eastern thinking:

The Pursuit of Happiness

December 30, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

The desire to be truly happy is most likely the deepest wish of every human being. When one asks how to achieve that state of happiness opposing ideas and suggestions are given.

Some think happiness is found by throwing off all restraints, by letting nobody boss them around. “No one is telling me what to do”! “No other person, organization or even the government has any right to interfere with my pursuit of happiness”, they may announce.

Others may look for happiness by accumulating “toys”. “If I just could have that car, boat, airplane… I know I would be the happiest person”.

Maybe it is a trim, healthy figure or fashionable clothes that would make you truly happy.

Just a brief look around will reveal whether these methods truly bring happiness. There are many people who seem to have it all, health, houses, and more money than they can ever spend – but are they happy? Sometimes it seems, that the more a person owns the unhappier he or she becomes. Ask the man who was stranded on an island all by himself, with everything his heart could desire and no laws and regulations but his own, whether he was happy. At best, his happiness lasted a short while.

Then there are those who do not concentrate on how they can make themselves happy but instead focus on the needs of others. Curiously enough, they have found true happiness! If you don’t believe me, ask someone like Mother Teresa!

One of my personal champions, Jim Elliott, a missionary to Native People in the jungles of South America penned these words:

“He is no fool, who gives what he can not keep, to gain what he can not loose”! giveJim gave up a promising career to bring the life-giving Gospel of Jesus to a remote tribe. While pursuing his calling, he and four other sharp, promising young men literally “gave” their lives. Today, the men who killed Jim and his co-workers have come to know Jesus Christ and lead the Christian Church among their people!

By the way, for a manual of principles leading to true happiness read and meditate on Matthew 5:1-12.

To Know God

December 30, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

What is God like? What we think about God can be influenced by a variety of facts and impressions. You may look to “church-going people” to get an idea of what God is like. Maybe a TV Evangelist, or a representative of one of our societies esteemed organizations or a letter “To the Editor” in your local newspaper written by someone who calls himself a Christian shapes your view of God. You may or may not gain glimpses of what God is really like from those sources-but where do you get the real thing?

In the Bible, we see God frequently portray himself as Father. We can see his fatherly love in the fact that:

He wants us

We are not biological accidents or illegitimate in God’s sight, even if our parents didn’t want us or our conception was part of an atrocious and sinful act such as rape. God planned your existence!

He loves us

God is neither a “Police-man-God”, waiting to whack us over the head at every misstep we make, nor a senile old “Santa Claus”, who just doles out presents to keep us happy. In Him integrity, justice, compassion and mercy are married in perfect union. His love is seen best in the fact that although our sinfulness required harsh judgment, through his son Jesus, God found a way to both be just and merciful, by placing our punishment on.

He teaches us

Because God loves us, he trains us. This might include difficult things for us, which we may not understand. Consider a human father who “tricks” his young child into taking a bitter tasting medicine. The little child may not understand the fathers reasoning at the time, but the loving father knew it was absolutely necessary for the child to take the medicine to get well. His discipline is often under-appreciated at the time one goes through it-but once the benefits are visible, hurt feelings give way to thankfulness for his insistence and patience with us.

Take some time today and start on a journey to know God more by reading his word and by talking to him! Study the life of Jesus, because the Bible says, that when we have known him, we will also know the Father (John 14:7-9)

What Do You Want On Your Tombstone?

December 30, 2008 by admin Leave a Comment

What a strange question to ask! Or could it be that struggling to find an answer to this question might be quite crucial?

Usually we are so busy with work and activities that we don’t take the time to think through what is really important to us and our unexamined life just dissipates. Do you have a strong sense of purpose and direction? Can you recognize progress and accomplishment in your life or does life “just happen to you?”

To be confronted with these questions can help us bring our lives into focus because it drives us to decide what is valuable and important to us.

Maybe the well being of your family and to be a caring neighbor is an important value to you. To introduce others to Jesus Christ, God’s Son, and to show them that they can have a vital relationship with him should be a value for all true followers of Jesus.

Once we have decided what our values are, we need to consider which changes are necessary to see those values reflected in our daily lives. This will provide us with a goal to aim at and by doing so, our lives will become purposeful and marked by progress and accomplishment.

Jesus taught us to pray: “…Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” It is good to diligently pray this prayer, however, for the result to occur, we are asked to cooperate with God! “He (God) creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing!” (Ephesians 2:10)

I would like to encourage you to find the “good works” God has prepared for you and to pursue achieving them with his empowerment, help and instruction.

One modern day poet said: “Even if you are on the right track-you’ll be run over eventually, if you just sit there!”

It will be hard work and require faith and tenacity but your life won’t lack purpose and direction anymore and your tombstone might say: Good Work! Job well done!
